The agricultural tribes of the District are mainly of Jat origin. However, there are agricultural families associating themselves with the Rajput descent. In the Gazetteer published in 1894, the Jats held 994 estates out of 1,223 estates, viz
- Gujranwala: 393 out of 455
- Wazirabad: 228 out of 266
- Hafizabad: 374 out of 502

In Gujranwala, the most important Jat tribes are Virakhs; Varaichs; Chimas; Gorayas; Dothars and Sekhus. The Virakhs are mainly, the Varaich largely, Sikhs; the Dhotars and Sekhus are nearly all Hindus; the other tribes are, for the most part, Muslims. In Wazirabad the eastern or more fertile portion of the tehsil is held by Chimas; the western and less fertile by Chathas
